The citizens of Western Balkan countries are still generally positive about their prospects of becoming citizens of the European Union. However, the path to European citizenship is long and at the moment the nations are stuck between two fires. The EU membership process seems endless and the current member states are doing very little to improve this process (where in fact some countries seem to be putting other obstacles in this way). On the other hand, governments, politicians, and institutions of these countries are the focus of people’s dissatisfaction. The public is skeptical about their government’s commitment to European integration and this undermines the value of democracy.
